The Road to Nationals

The 2019 college gymnastics season was an exciting one, with teams across the country vying for a chance to compete at the NCAA National Championships. With countless hours of practice and preparation, the top teams in the nation were ready to showcase their skills on the biggest stage.

The Top Contenders

Heading into the championships, there were a few teams that were considered favorites to take home the title. The Oklahoma Sooners were the defending champions, and had a strong season that saw them finish with a 32-0 record. The UCLA Bruins were also a top contender, with a talented roster that included Kyla Ross and Katelyn Ohashi.

The Qualifying Round

The first day of competition was the qualifying round, where teams had to perform on each apparatus in order to earn a spot in the team finals. The top three teams from each of the two qualifying sessions would move on to compete for the national title.

The Team Finals

In the team finals, the Oklahoma Sooners and UCLA Bruins faced off for the top spot. It was a close competition, but ultimately the Sooners were able to defend their title with a score of 198.3375. The Bruins finished in second place with a score of 198.25.

Individual Event Finals

The day after the team finals, gymnasts who had qualified for individual events competed in the event finals. Here are some of the highlights from each apparatus:

Vault

On vault, it was a tie for first place between Trinity Thomas of Florida and Maggie Nichols of Oklahoma. Both gymnasts scored a 9.9625.

Uneven Bars

Kyla Ross of UCLA took home the uneven bars title with a score of 9.9875. Her routine was flawless, with intricate connections and difficult skills.

Balance Beam

In a stunning upset, Sarah Finnegan of LSU took home the balance beam title with a score of 9.95. She had a confident and precise routine, with no major wobbles or balance checks.

Floor Exercise

The floor exercise final was perhaps the most highly anticipated event, with fan favorites Katelyn Ohashi and Peng-Peng Lee both competing. In the end, it was Ohashi who took home the title with a score of 9.95. Her routine was full of energy and personality, with her now-famous Michael Jackson-inspired choreography.

A Look Ahead

The 2019 college gymnastics season was certainly one to remember, with incredible performances from teams and individuals alike. As we look ahead to the future, we can only imagine what the next season will bring. But for now, we can bask in the excitement and beauty of the 2019 national championships.
